What Are Dentures?

Dentures are a time-tested solution for patients missing some or all their teeth due to tooth decay, periodontal disease, or trauma. They consist of prosthetic teeth attached to a gum-colored base. Sometimes, they have a supportive metal framework. Most denture options are removable by the patient to facilitate cleaning and allow tissue rest. Dentures can also be stabilized with implants!

There are two types of removable dentures available to you: complete and partial. A complete or full denture replaces an entire arch of upper or lower teeth. A partial denture replaces one or a few missing teeth alongside a patient’s remaining teeth in an arch.

Complete Dentures - An Overview

At KL Dental Studio, we offer multiple options for our denture patients. We always start with a thorough evaluation. After reviewing your medical and dental history, we will discuss your current concerns and evaluate any of your existing appliances. We take photographs, digital scans, and radiographs (x-rays) to accurately assess the current condition of your teeth, gums, and bone. We also evaluate the soft tissues in your mouth and the surrounding muscles. After gathering this information and considering your treatment goals, Dr. Luse will coordinate with you a plan to restore your smile!

Healing Denture: At times, we need to remove any remaining teeth before placing your denture. Healing dentures are prepared in advance and delivered as soon as the teeth are removed, so you don't have to go without teeth! However, the bone and gums will shrink and change shape during healing, so your healing denture will require adjustments. Healing dentures are a temporary solution until your bone and tissues are ready for your final denture.

Final Denture: Final dentures are made from impressions or scans of your mouth after healing, allowing us to capture the subtle details of your gums and bite. We usually create these permanent restorations six months after removing any remaining teeth, ensuring the best comfort, fit, and function.

Partial Dentures - An Overview

Removable partial dentures are designed to replace one or several missing teeth. They typically consist of natural-looking prosthetic teeth attached to gum-colored acrylic with a supporting metal framework. Partials often connect to a patient’s existing teeth with metal or plastic clasps.

Implant Dentures - An Overview

Implant dentures are the standard of care. They are the next best thing to natural, healthy teeth. Unlike traditional dentures that rely on the gums and facial muscles for support, implant dentures attach to dental implants, providing unmatched comfort, stability, and durability.

Dental implant restorations offer numerous benefits. They are the only tooth replacements that mimic the function of natural tooth roots, stimulating the bone in the area, preventing bone loss, and enhancing your oral health. Implant dentures allow you to eat your favorite foods, speak clearly, and smile with confidence once again.

If you are interested in implant dentures, Dr. Luse will be happy to discuss your options and review the types of implant dentures available. Please contact our office to schedule an appointment.

How Should You Care for Your Dentures?

To keep your smile healthy and your dentures in their best shape, it's essential to maintain good oral hygiene. Make sure to brush any remaining teeth and clean your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth daily. You should also use a soft-bristled brush and denture cleanser to brush and clean your dentures.

If your dentures are damaged or if you have any concerns, contact our office to schedule an appointment. We can make adjustments or arrangements for repairs to ensure your restorations continue enhancing your smile and quality of life.
